Dune Alright: Silver Lake Dunes, Michigan via The Midwestival

During summer the Silver Lake Dunes are a go-to spot for many Michiganders. People from all over the state flock to climb all over the towering sand castles to see a birds eye view of Silver Lake or Lake Michigan.

Suncrest Gardens Farm in Cochrane, WI [Road Trip: The Great River Road]

We use the word underrated a lot on this blog, but this part of the world is just that. I was reminded of that fact once again a couple of weeks ago as I partnered up with Travel Wisconsin on a road trip down the Wisconsin's Great River Road.

Midwest Maker: Cortney Heimerl, Quilter and Community Builder

August 4, 2016 Tori Szekeres
Midwest Maker: Cortney Heimerl via The Midwestival

Milwaukee quilter Cortney Heimerl knows her quilts won't last forever. She's okay with that.

"If you don't use a quilt, you can preserve it and the quilt will last more than a lifetime. But if you begin to use it, that small pressure of fabric between fingertips and fabric laying across laps will slowly wear it out. If you really use a quilt and you sleep with it or use it to mop your tears up during a sad movie or drape it on someone you love when they are sick, it turns into something else. It develops this patina of use, which I think is beautiful," she says.

Yeah, I know what you're thinking.

Cincinnati Chili Popsicles? Ewwwhy? No. Just, no.

But how about instead of no... we say YES? It's more fun.

Some people have reached out wondering why @themidwestival has been so much quieter since last fall, and I thought it was time to come clean. It's some of the usual things getting in the way like life/work/other projects (like @worthypause). But the reality is that I found it much harder to champion the Midwest after its electoral votes handed the presidency to a dangerous conspiracy theorist, paranoid narcissist, admitted sexual predator and all-around joke of a human being. Except this joke isn't funny. Instead it's escalating global conflicts via Twitter, defending Nazi terrorists, quietly dismantling the EPA and employing white supremacists. I'm (clearly) having trouble finding many positive words (or words at all) to share on our blog or here lately, so here we are. That said, if you want to share something real and important on @themidwestival beyond only what's pretty or positive or punny, DM me with your stories, essays, personal experiences in this fucked up world. Let's give some of these photos more weight. #themidwestival (via me, @anniedsouz/@worthypause)
